Chemical explosions at 600 UK schools as bomb squads move in

BOMB squads descended on hundreds of schools in the country in response to a major chemical incident.

The teams went to schools to blow up dangerous chemicals which may be have been responsible for a number of mystery explosions heard in some regions of the country on November 2.

Residents in Doncaster and Sheffield reported hearing numerous loud blasts – with the explosions described as too loud to be fireworks.

What they were hearing was ordnance teams destroying chemicals at 40 Yorkshire schools.

It came after a warning about stocks of 2,4 dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) sparked numerous calls to the Army.

Squads then went to 600 education establishments to destroy the science lab chemicals in in late-October and early-November.

The scale of the emergency response was revealed after the BBC submitted a Freedom of Information request to the government.

The Department for Education (DfE) said it coordinated with the Army to carry out the "necessary disposals".

The incident was sparked after schools were told to check the chemical by the government advisory CLEAPSS (Consortium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services).

A total of 594 separate controlled explosions were then done.
