'We see lights on inside but we do not hear voices' Avalanche rescue horror

A RESCUE worker has described the horror of digging through tons of snow in a bid to find dozens of people missing in a massive avalanche.

The huge snow collapse was triggered by a series of earthquakes that struck Italy yesterday.

A ski resort in Pescara, on the slope of Gran Sasso, was totally engulfed by the avalanche, with the 30 guests thought to be staying there left trapped.

Rescue teams currently on the scene have said there are almost certainlyn fatalties, with most people staying there feared dead.

Antonio Crocetta, one of the leaders of the Abruzzo mountain rescue, said: "There are so many dead.

"We see lights on inside but we do not hear voices."

Local reports state two people – named as Giampiero Wall and Fabio Salzetta – have been rescued.

However, it is believed they were not actually inside the hotel when the avalanche struck.

The president of the Province of Pescara, Antonio Di Marco, wrote on Facebook: "I rescued two people.

"There are several wounded, but it is not known how many are still missing or even dead.

"Of course, the property has been taken in full by the avalanche, so that has moved ten meters."

A blizzard is also apparently hampering the rescue effort with estimations of arrival times at two to three hours, according to reports

From midnight, central Italy was struck by wave ater wave of earthquakes.

The National Insitute of Geophysics and Volcanology counted 82 of them, with the strongest measuring 3.5 in the Richter scale.
