Risk of erectile dysfunction increase with the amount of drugs taken

In one study, scientists found that the greater was the amount of drugs taken by men, the greater were their chances of suffering from erectile dysfunction. According to the results of the study, men who drank 10 or more drugs were 1.6 times higher odds of developing this problem when compared to men who drank only two or fewer drugs.

The researchers advise that doctors should improve therapies currently applied to men suffering from erectile dysfunction and decrease the number of prescription drugs when possible. Changes in lifestyle, such as changes in diet and exercise, can also be beneficial and may even replace some medications.

"Sometimes patients may be taking more medication than is absolutely necessary. While doctors and patients, we can always try to reduce the number of medications ingested every medical visit. If we are aware of it, I think it could help patients who have erectile dysfunction, "explains the researcher Diana C. Londoño.

No one knows the cause of the relationship between drugs and the condition, but one hypothesis states that interactions between the drugs could be responsible. Some of the drugs could have side effects like erectile dysfunction, even if it is not written in the box.

The research was published in the British journal Urology International.
