Horror as runaway car breaks driver's legs after handbrake fails before rolling into sea

A DRIVER was run over by his own car after his handbrake failed and broke both his legs before coming to a stop in the sea.

The Volkswagen Passat was left submerged underwater in Penmaenmawr, Wales after the incident on Saturday night.

Bangor coastguard and police officers were called and could only just spot the car – because it was under the sea.

This comes as a Ferrari crashed into a group of teenagers in Battersea today.

It was recovered on Sunday morning by Anglesey-based Moduron Maethlu Motors Ltd.

The firm’s general manager Aled Thomas said: “From what I can understand, the driver got out the car and the handbrake failed, causing the car to run down the slipway and into the water.

“Unfortunately the car also ran him over and has broken his legs and he is in hospital.”

The recovery team arrived on the scene at 8.30am on Sunday.

And they found it difficult to find the vehicle because the tide had carried it further down the beach.

 It was almost completely submerged.

He added: “We could only just see the roof of the car at that point so we had to wait for the tide to go out so we could clear rocks out of the path of the car.

“We then drove on the beach with the Land Rover and winched the vehicle off the rocks so we could tow it back on to the slipway where is was then loaded on the truck.”

It took them four hours to recover the car.
