Cops find £1m stash of cash in back of London black cab

STUNNED police found almost £1million in a suitcase in the back of a black cab.

Cops discovered the huge stash when they stopped and searched the taxi.

In the back was a holdall containing £943,000.

Officers think gangsters had been using the cab to transport their crime profits.

Most of the haul was handed over to the government.

But police will be allowed to keep some of it.

The money was found in the vehicle in London.

Police commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said: “It’s satisfying to see criminals pay back for the damage they cause communities through the assets we’ve recovered.

“The message is loud and clear, crime does not pay and criminals who think it does will have to deal with the full force of the police service.”

Forces have been allowed to confiscate profits crooks make from their lawbreaking by using the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

Detectives can investigate the finances of suspects to see if they have prospered from illegal activities.

A court can then order the criminals to pay up.

Last year the Met recovered £73.4m in ill-gotten gains.
