Hottest Bank Holiday Monday EVER as temperatures hit 26.9C

BRITS are sweltering in the hottest early May Bank Holiday Monday ever, the Met Office has said.

Temperatures at Heathrow Airport have hit 26.9C, with the mercury expected to keep rising for the rest of the afternoon.

Earlier, temperatures hit 25.1C in Gosport, on the south coast, this morning, smashing the previous record of 23.6C in 1999.

Monday's high temperatures are expected to soar to a sweltering 29C, making the UK hotter than Mexico.

Greg Dewhurst from the Met Office said: "We have smashed the warmest Bank Holiday Monday for early May, but for the whole bank holiday weekend itself we have got to be over 28C.

"The highest temperatures of the day will be around 3-4pm so we will probably know more then."

The early May bank holiday was introduced in 1978, and temperatures over the weekend have never gone above 28C.

But the stunning weather hasn't been enjoyed by everyone.

Northern Ireland and Scotland are seeing cloudier skies, the Met Office has said.

And low cloud, mist and sea fog are hitting the northern coast of Devon and Cornwall.

Experts have warned that the royal wedding later this month may be a washout.

Forecaster for the Met Charlie Powell said: "It looks like we should be prepared for some pretty changeable weather throughout the second half of May".
