Inferno rips through block as 200 firefighters battle blaze – 12 casualties reported

MORE than 200 firefighters bravely battled a fire at apartments in New York that wounded at least 12 people.

New York Fire Department scrambled to the scene in the Bronx in the this morning after the blaze took hold at 5.30am local time.

The crews had to tackle sub-zero temperatures of -9C while they battled the blaze in Commonwealth Avenue.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in a furniture shop on the ground floor before spreading to the apartments above.

Pictures show dozens of emergency vehicles as crews use ladders to douse the four-storey building.

It comes just days after 12 people were killed in an apartment block fire also in the Bronx.

Pictures show huge plumes of smoke rising from the block which is surrounded by emergency vehicles.

Orange flames can be seen rising from the roof the build - seemingly breaching homes on the upper floors.

Firefighters have had to deal with ice on the streets surrounded the building.

Neighbours described banging on each others doors to make sure everyone was awake to evacuate.

One woman said: "I woke up my husband, my kids and said listen there's a fire in the building

"By the time we opened the door in the hallway, there was black smoke.”

FDNY initially tweeted the blaze was a “five alarm” fire before escalating it to a “six alarm”.

The rescue service confirmed there were more than 200 firefighters on the scene.

At least 12 people have been wounded in the fire, but thankfully no deaths have been reported.

However, one person is reported to have been seriously injured.

Last week’s fatal apartment blaze was the worst fire in New York for 25 years.

It is believed to have been started by a toddler who was playing with his parents’ cooker.

Emmanuel Mensah, a soldier home for Christmas, died in the fire after running inside to save lives.
