Iraq prime minister formally declares victory over ISIS in historic televised speech


 
IRAQI prime minister Haider al-Abadi has formally announced the collapse of ISIS in an historic televised speech.
 
 Haider al-Abadi, the leader of Iraq, announced the collapse of the terror group in war-torn Mosul this evening.
 
 He said: “I announce from here the end and the failure and the collapse of the terrorist state of falsehood and terrorism which the terrorist Daesh announced from Mosul.”
 
 The fall of ISIS in the region was declared yesterday.
 
 Since then ISIS cowards have been spotted throwing themselves into the River Tigris to escape the battlefield.
 
 Mr al-Abadi wore a black military uniform and was flanked by commanders from the security servies as he addressed the nation.
 
 He added: "We have another mission ahead of us, to create stability, to build and clear Daesh cells and that requires an intelligence and security effort, and the unity which enabled us to fight Daesh."
 
 He then raised the Iraqi flag.
 Around 900,000 people have been displaced by the fighting and thousands are believed to have been killed during the struggle.
 
 ISIS declared "caliphate" in Mosul in 2014 – claiming it would take over the world.
 
 The whereabouts of its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is not known despite various reports he was killed.
