Stansted Airport suspends flights and closes runway – Luton warns of cancellations

STANSTED Airport suspended flights in and out of the hub this morning as wintry conditions wreaked havoc on Britain.

The airport tweeted: "While our teams are working to clear the airfield, the runway is temporarily closed.

"It will reopen as soon as it's safe for aircraft to land and take off. Thank you."

A number of flights scheduled for later this morning have been cancelled.

Journeys to hotspots including Oslo, Budapest and Cork have been scrapped.

Luton airport also said in a statement that flights may be delayed or cancelled.

A spokesman said: "The airport is open and the runway is operational. Some flights may be subject to delay and/or cancellation.

"Passengers should check with their airline for the status of their flight.

"A list of airline contact details can be found here

"We will continue to update our website and social media feeds if this situation changes significantly.

"We advise all passengers to check traffic and travel information before setting off and allow extra time to get to the airport."

The airport later tweeted that the runway had been reopened and flights no longer suspended.

But flights were suspended again between 12.27pm and 12.51pm, with journeys to Milan, Dortmund and Rome cancelled this afternoon.

A spokesman for the airport could not confirm if the runway will be closed again today.
