Four Brits and two others, including a boy, 11, have been killed in a sea plane horror crash in Australia, according to reports.

The plane went down on Sydney's Hawkesbury River shortly after 3pm local time in a tragedy on New Year's Eve.

Police divers found the aircraft upside down at the bottom of the river under 13 metres of water with six bodies inside.

Local media reports four British nationals are believed to be among in the dead, along with the pilot and the 11-year-old boy.

Acting Superintendent Michael Gorman said: "Police divers are on scene and three bodies have so far been recovered."

Police divers have pulled three bodies from the wreck, and emergency services continue to probe the sunken plane.

"For reason that are not known at this stage, the plane has hit the water and it has subsequently sunk," said a police spokesman.

"At the time of the collision, there was a pilot and five passengers on board. I can confirm the six people on the plane are deceased."

A Sydney Seaplanes spokesman confirmed the aircraft involved in the crash was one of theirs and that they were working with police.

He told local media: “Obviously we are very concerned and trying to determine the details at this point."

The company offers flights over the city with swoops over famous sights including the famous Opera House and the Harbour Bridge.

TV journalist for 7NewsSydney, Freya Cole, tweeted: "Horrific details coming out of this seaplane crash in the Hawkesbury River.

"Among the six victims are believed to be an 11 year old boy, the pilot and 4 British nationals."
