Turpin family: Who are David and Louise accused of shackling 13 children in Horror House?

DAVID and Louise Turpin were arrested when police arrived at their property in California and found their children “shackled to their beds”. But who are they?

When a 17-year-old girl escaped from her home in California and told police where she had been, the shocking story of the Turpins started to unfold.

The cops entered the house – only to find 12 more children were “shackled to their beds” in “dark and foul-smelling” conditions.

The two parents have now been charged with torture and false-imprisonment – which they deny.

Other charges for the parents include seven counts of abuse of a dependent adult, six counts of child abuse or neglect and 12 counts of false imprisonment.

If convicted they could face a maximum sentence of between 94 years and life in prison.

Who are David and Louise Turpin?

David Allen Turpin, 57, and Louise Anna Turpin, 49, lived in their home in Perris, California with their 13 children.

The ages of the children ranged from two to 29.

They had lived in the four-bedroom, three-bathroom house since 2014.

The couple tried to portray an all-American happy life on social media, showing pictures from Disneyland, weddings and birthdays.

Where is the Turpin family house?

Mr and Mrs Turpin had previously lived in Rio Vista, Texas from 1999 to 2014.

A former neighbour of the “House of horrors” family, Richard Vinyard, revealed he was suspicious of the parents, who lived “waist-deep in filth".

He said their living room was “littered with faeces” and that “dead dogs and cats” were inside the house.

Shortly after the family moved to the town near Fort Worth, one of the older girls allegedly tried to run away but was returned by a local resident.

The parents allegedly only allowed their children to be fed once a day, and shower twice a year.

What will happen to the children now?

Mr Turpin’s parents, James and Betty are from West Virginia, and they have expressed their “surprise and shock” at the allegations against their son.

It is said that Mr Turpin has a relatively well-paid job as an engineer at Northrop Grunmman, an aeronautics and defence technology company.

According to court reports the parents filed for bankruptcy in California in 2011.

He reportedly earned around $140,000 a year (£99,300), according to the bankruptcy documents. Louise was listed as a “homemaker”.

Together they listed around $150,000 (£106,400) in assets, but also debts of around $240,000 (£170,300).
