Academy in Sao Jose dos Campos has ramps, lift and adapted toilets. Items that most gyms do not.


 The place is pumping iron, strengthen the body, gain muscle. Like any gym. The difference is that the Health Evidence, Sao Jose dos Campos, in São Paulo, is also wheelchair.

The devices are used by all the 300 students, but its provision was scheduled to make room for a wheelchair. Simple adjustments with elastics, balls and pulleys allow the drills specific to disabled people.

"Obviously, the wheelchair can not do all the exercises in a typical bodybuilding training. But in this space, the possible exercises, he has the pull and push the weight in all directions that the work requires," says physical education teacher Arthur Hashimoto.

Hashimoto says that, when assembled the academy in 2009, there was no clear idea of offering a special room for disabled person. But the building's construction, which is all social and eco-goodie, it took into account accessibility.

There are ramps, lift, adapted toilets. Things indispensable for anyone who has difficulty moving, but that most gyms do not have. How one thing leads to another, the gap eventually drew wheelchair users who want, and rehabilitation exercises, train like everyone else. There are now nine students with disabilities that make personalized training there.

For them or not, the appeal of the Academy is functional training, which uses multiple muscle groups simultaneously and dynamically (as in the daily movements) and strengthens the body's center of balance.

Only Hashimoto does not charge tuition for the training program for its students functional wheelchair, it is a nonprofit project. Those who pay can contribute something.
