The Executive Committee of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) announced on Saturday 11 in Guangzhou, China, the Special Olympics program in 2016. In addition to the 20 sports that were already part of the London 2012 program, were included canoeing and triathlon.
Seven vying for the right terms to be part of the Paralympic Games from Rio: badminton, canoeing, golf, football electric wheelchair, taekwondo, triathlon and basketball for people with intellectual disabilities.
All demands, plus the 20 already existing arrangements were reviewed and evaluated by the CPI and a recommendation presented to the Executive Committee. After discussing each application, the IPC Executive Committee voted on Saturday, unanimously in favor of keeping all 20 sports at the Games program in 2016.
As a result, the majority (seven to three) decided to increase the number of modalities in 2016. Finally, the Executive Committee voted to recommend that the CPI only canoeing and triathlon were considered for inclusion in a broader program. By six votes to four the two methods were accepted.
"The whole process showed that there is interest from several international federations in their respective modalities include the Paralympic Games, which shows the growth of the event itself and the Paralympic Movement. The Executive Committee of the CPI has chosen methods that have wide appeal among young people and are growing worldwide. It was a wise decision and certainly no Rio de Janeiro will offer a spectacular setting for both competitions in 2016, "said the president of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPC) and member of the Executive Committee of the CPI, Andrew Parsons.
"In terms of the Brazilian delegation, we will start work in 2011 with their respective confederations with the goal of having athletes vying for medals in the two schemes already in his debut in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro."
