Teeth-shattering brutality of LAWLESS first-ever UFC will horrify you

MMA fans have been reliving the brutal birth of the UFC by revisiting some of the barbaric knockouts that occurred back in 1993.

With the sport of mixed martial arts still in its infancy, rules and regulations were scarce.

In fact, only two rules existed: no biting or eye gouging, with non-compliance being penalised with a $1500 fine.

The tournament-style event featured no weight classes, meaning the first ever fight under the UFC saw 460lb sumo Teila Tuli take on 216lb kickboxer Gerard Gordeau.

The action itself – while shockingly brutal – finished with an unexpected winner, as Gordeau advanced to the next round despite being eclipsed in size and weight.

He secured victory after tripping the charging Tuli before smashing him in the mouth with a savage kick that knocked three of Tuli’s teeth out.

Two of those teeth removed were left embedded in Gordeau’s foot during the grisly strike.

In the following match, world champion kickboxer Kevin Rosier usurped Zane Frazier with a series of kicks that, under today’s rules, might well be punished with a jail sentence if not a simple disqualification.

Repeatedly punching his downed opponent in the back of the head, Rosier then finished the fight by stomping his rival’s skull into the canvas before a towel was mercifully thrown into the ring to halt the contest.

Thankfully, the sport has evolved rapidly since the early days, with unified rules recognised by most, if not all, mixed martial arts promotions across the globe.

But as Chris Weidman’s controversial TKO loss to Gegard Mousasi showed at UFC 210 last weekend, there is always room for improvement.
