The city of Lisbon will receive (between 1 and June 9) the Boccia World Cup, which will involve 250 athletes representing 35 countries.
The method, which was formerly played only by people with cerebral palsy, became so popular that nowadays it is possible to see any individual to practice bocce.
In 1984 the IOC decided to include the sport in the Paralympic lot of arrangements, becoming best known in the whole world.
The Portuguese team, one of the strongest in the world, four years ago won five medals (two gold, two silver and one bronze) and the major objective of the corners of the team is to repeat or even improve, the marks obtained in Brazil .
For those less familiar with this game then present a short summary of the main characteristics of this interesting method:
- The game is aimed at scoring, by launching six balls toward a target ball (a kind of bowls or curling).
- The target ball is always white, and the balls of the teams are always blue and red, as are the colors that attract wide attention of people with cerebral palsy.
- The balls are made of stone, but are lined with leather and sponge, the players can toss them, kick them or use a gizmo called the pipeline (in this case, a member body of judges will have to put the chute in position that the player wants and the ball at the top of the same trough). The player will make the ball roll down the chute, pushing it with a pointer that is tied to the head. These devices are used only by athletes with a high degree of disability, because they can not control the movements of the hands and feet.
- The competitions are divided into four classes (BC1, BC2, BC3 and BC4), and each "category" is an individual test and a legal proof.
