Conor McGregor vs Rafael dos Anjos OFF as UFC lightweight champion breaks his foot
RAFAEL DOS ANJOS has been forced to withdraw from his UFC lightweight title defence against Conor McGregor.
Dos Anjos was scheduled to defend his belt against the Irishman at UFC 196 on March 5.
However, the Brazilian has been forced out of the contest with a broken foot.
According to Globosporte, the Kings MMA star, 25-7, suffered the injury in training late last week.
The UFC haven't officially confirmed the injury to Dos Anjos, but it's understood that they are working on finding a replacement to face McGregor.
Dos Anjos' late withdrawal will no doubt leave McGregor with a major sense of deja vu.
Last July, he was scheduled to face then-featherweight champion Jose Aldo at UFC 189 but saw his opportunity to claim the title disappear before his eyes 12 days before the fight as the Brazilian cracked one of his ribs in training.
The inevitable postponement of the bout delays McGregor's chance to make UFC history.
The Dublin native, 27, could've become the first man in the promotion's history to simultaneously hold two titles with a victory over Dos Anjos.
However, he'll now have to wait a few months to write his name into the UFC's history books.
McGregor, 19-2, was confident of dethroning the current lightweight king and has already set his sights on claiming the welterweight title, which is currently wrapped around the waist of Robbie Lawler.
"I'm an active champion, I will fight in many weight divisions," he said.
"As it grows and as it forms now I like the sound of that 170lb title as well - I got to be honest with myself.
"I feel like I can take down them three gold belts.
"And I feel like I can do it by the year's end."
