Deal Done: Major breakthrough as Chelsea secure agreement in principle with top manager

CHELSEA have secured an agreement in principle with Italy boss Antonio Conte.

According to Italian paper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Blues held talks with Conte about taking charge at Stamford Bridge in the summer and the finer details of a contract were discussed.

The 46-year-old's deal with Italy expires at the end of this summer's European Championships and it's claimed he fancies a crack at the Premier League.

Conte is now leading Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone and Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri in the race to be Jose Mourinho's permanent replacement and Roman Abramovich will finalise a decision in mid-March.

Allegri has dampened speculation of a move to Stamford Bridge and his agent Giovanni Branchini said: "Allegri will stay where he is, he’s happy at Juventus."

Guus Hiddink has steadied the ship since being appointed interim boss in December but is not expected to continue beyond this campaign.

John Obi Mikel has backed the Dutchman to continue on a longer-term basis.

“If you speak to the players, 98 or 99 per cent of them want Guus to stay," he said.

"I mean, we are very happy, we are performing well and let’s hope this continues.

“Obviously, definitely, I want him to stay. It is the choice of the owner, the club and the board. They will have to decide.”
