Europa League draw: Balague reveals why Arsenal should be happy with Atletico Madrid tie

GUILLEM BALAGUE claims that Atletico Madrid are one the world’s best knock-out teams but insists they still have weaknesses that Arsenal can exploit.

Arsenal booked their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League with a 6-3 aggregate win over CSKA Moscow.

It was slightly less comfortable for Atleti, who came through with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Sporting Lisbon to claim a spot in the last four.

Balague would have preferred a showdown between the two sides in the final but has pointed out the areas in the Gunners may be able to use to their advantage.

”It’s a shame Arsenal and Atletico are meeting now, it would have been nice to see them in the final,” Balague said.

“Arsenal are going to face one of the best teams in knock-out competitions in the world. With what they have, they tend to do very well in knock-out competitions.

"But They have weaknesses as well. In the past going a goal up would have been guarantee of victory, but they have dropped points after going ahead, they are less impressive from set-pieces in both boxes, and showed against Sporting that now the squad has become smaller, players are becoming affected by injuries and tiredness.

"They go to Levante this weekend with only 13 players from the first-team at a crucial part of the season where you have to be sharp with players in front of goal

“They may struggle with it. There are angles Arsenal can be positive about."

Domestically, Diego Simeone’s men have fared much better than their European opponents.

Atletico currently sit second in La Liga, 11 points behind Barcelona whereas Arsenal find themselves fifth in the Premier League standings, 30 points behind runaway leader Manchester City.

The Europa League presents the best possible opportunity for Arsene Wenger to secure Champions League football next season as his side are still 13 points away from the top four.
