Moeen down! Ali needs a vote of confidence, says England legend Graeme Swann

MOEEN Ali is lacking in confidence and needs a wise shoulder to lean on – but he is still England’s big Ashes spin hope.

And Graeme Swann has backed the Worcestershire star to bounce back from his early season disappointment to be a summer hero.

Ali is fighting to keep his Test spot with Yorkshire’s Adil Rashid, 27, who has impressed new head coach Trevor Bayliss, bidding to take it from him for the opening clash in Cardiff.

Rashid, has shown he can spin the ball more than Ali during the ODI success over New Zealand.

And that appeals to Aussie Bayliss, who wants maximum bowling fire power at his disposal to win back the Ashes

But former spin king Swann said: “For me, Moeen is still the best option England have in the spin department. What he offers to the team is still as good as anyone else around.

“So just because he has had a?couple?of?less-than spectacular games there is no point suddenly writing him off.

“I feel for Moeen because there has?been?a?lot?of expectation since he did so well when he came into the Test team and he has been unable?to?enjoy?his bowling.

“He has been under such scrutiny all the time and if you let it eat you up it will.

“He is clearly lacking a bit of confidence and that is affecting the way he bowls.

“I have total confidence in him because he has the skills and attributes but is not able to show them off right now. He has too much talent for that.
