LONDON 2012: DAVID BECKHAM SNUBBED BY TEAM GB

DAVID BECKHAM has been left out of Team GB's squad for the London 2012 Olympics.

The former England skipper had been widely tipped to be one of three over-age players permitted in the squad, but it has now been confirmed that his Olympic dream is over.

Instead, Welsh duo Craig Bellamy and Ryan Giggs are expected to take the over-age spots, alongside Manchecter City's Micah Richards.

It is a surprising snub for Beckham, who played a key role in London's successful bid to host the Games.

Commenting on his omission by Team GB boss Stuart Pearce, the LA Galaxy star told of his disappointment at the decision.

"Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me. So I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad," he said.

"Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."

But Beckham will still be hopeful of playing some role in the opening ceremony on July 27.
