JOEY BARTON 12-GAME BAN

JOEY BARTON was left stunned last night after being hit with a record 12-game ban.

The disgraced QPR midfielder was also fined £75,000 for his shameful behaviour at the Etihad Stadium on the final afternoon of the season.

Barton was found guilty of two charges of violent conduct by a three-man disciplinary panel, following a seven-hour hearing yesterday at the FA’s Wembley headquarters.

He was handed separate four-game bans for hacking down Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany, having been sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez in the face.

Barton’s red card in the second half of City’s dramatic 3-2 win earned him an automatic four-match ban as it was his second of the season.

Barton accepted the violent conduct charge relating to the Aguero offence but denied butting Kompany.

Starsport understands Barton, 29, will appeal against the four-game suspension for aiming a butt at City captain Kompany.

But if he loses his appeal, he could be hit with an extra two-game ban, taking his overall suspension to 14 matches.

Barton refused the use of his club’s legal experts in favour of appointing his own solicitor, Mel Stein, for the disciplinary hearing.

But the decision made no difference as the controversial star was hit with the longest ban ever dished out in England for an incident on the pitch.

Rio Ferdinand was banned for eight months for missing a drug test.

Manchester United star Eric Cantona was hit with a nine-month suspension following his infamous kung-fu kick on a Crystal Palace fan at Selhurst Park.

Both incidents, though, did not take place on the field of play.

So Barton’s suspension is a new record, eclipsing the 11-match ban Paolo Di Canio received in 1998 for pushing referee Paul Alcock.

The chairman of the regulatory commission said: “There are rules of conduct that should be adhered to and such behaviour tarnishes the image of football in this country, particularly as this match was the pinnacle of the domestic season and watched by millions around the globe.”

The ban means he could miss the first three months of next season and does little to help his chances of saving his Rangers career.

Owner Tony Fernandes and boss Mark Hughes will meet next week to discuss the midfielder’s future.

Fernandes has launched an internal investigation into his conduct and is keen to terminate Barton’s £80,000-a-week deal.
