Rashford and Sturridge make England's Euro 2016 squad as Drinkwater and Townsend are axed

MARCUS RASHFORD is off to France this summer after Roy Hodgson took a Euro 2016 punt.

Hodgson has opted to take five strikers to the tournament, with rookie Rashford and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge joining Jamie Vardy, Harry Kane and captain Wayne Rooney.

Leicester Danny Drinkwater and Newcastle winger Andros Towsend join Fabian Delph in being left at home.

Rashford put forward his case for inclusion with a goal on his debut against Australia on Friday.

The Manchester United striker scored after just three minutes and Hodgson has decided to take him to the tournament, just three months after he burst onto the scene at Old Trafford.

Sturridge also makes the cut despite doubts over his fitness.

Premier League winner Drinkwater only made his international debut earlier this year but was included in England's 26-man training camp.

But the Three Lions boss has decided against taking him across the Channel after trimming three players ahead of Uefa's midnight deadline.

The Leicester star wrote on Instagram: "Disappointed not to make the final 23!

"Would of been a fantastic experience to go to the euros as a player... But I'll be supporting the country like I always have!

"The seasons been a huge positive for me.. Going into next season as a premier league champion! Good luck to the lads... Bring it home #england

Newcastle star Townsend also misses out, despite his impressive end of season form the relegated Magpies.

Drinkwater and Townsend join Manchester City's Fabian Delph in being cut.

The FA confirmed last week that the midfielder wouldn't be considered after picking up a groin injury.

England face Portugal at Wembley on Thursday in their final pre-tournament warm-up.

They then travel to France to prepare for their opening game against Russia in Marseille on June 11.

Hodgson's men then have their battle of Britain clash with Wales in Lens on June 16 before rounding things off against Slovakia in Saint-Etienne on June 20.
