Paralympic athletes rely on foreign equipment to maintain competitiveness

According to the president of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, Brazil still has much to evolve on the question of the manufacture of sports equipment geared to people with disabilities.

The Brazilian industry does not have technology for the development of prostheses that meet the needs of amputees to perform activities paraesportivas. They are forced to rely on imported products to ensure better performance in competitions.

"Brazil still has much progress on the issue of manufacturing of sports equipment geared to people with disabilities, especially with regard to prosthetic competition," said President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), Andrew Parsons. The devices produced in the country do not show the quality of big foreign brands, he added.

The athlete Alex de Souza, transtibial amputee (shin down) to 3 years old, started racing in 1999. Today's professional marathon runner who collects gold medals in events like the half marathon in Lisbon, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires and New York.

For corer, he uses a prosthesis with German technology puts the same level of competitiveness of foreign athletes who use technology or similar. Are carbon blades that provide a return of energy more specifically to the issue of sport. He has the prosthesis facing the sport and one for use on a daily basis.

Parsons pointed out, however, that for the use of people who are not athletes, there are already domestic equipment of good quality.
