LUKAS PODOLSKI FIT FOR ARSENAL
LUKAS PODOLSKI had a medical yesterday, paving the way for Arsenal to snap up the £10.9m striker.
Gunners officials travelled to Germany following talks with Podolski's Cologne club.
But Arsenal won't stop there and are ready to ****** even more cash to reinforce Arsene Wenger's squad for next season.
The Gunners are ready to smash their record transfer fee – £15m for Andrey Arshavin – to sign £30m-rated German golden boy Mario Goetze, 19, from Borussia Dortmund.
“If we find the right person for the right position we are happy to buy,” chairman Peter Hill-Wood told Starsport.
“We have got enough to pay anything but silly prices.”
Arsenal’s early agreement to secure German international Podolski, 26, is a clear sign Wenger wants to keep skipper Robin van Persie by proving he intends to revitalise the club.
The quality of Arsenal’s summer signings is set to be the key factor in the Dutchman’s decision on whether to sign a new contract.
Although Van Persie is set to be offered a massive pay hike to around £6m a year, along with a possible £5m signing bonus, the 28-year-old goal machine is desperate to see Arsenal become serious title challengers again.
Hill-Wood said: “I think Robin and his family are very happy in London and I don’t think he is solely motivated by money as some players are.”
Starsport revealed prior to the start of the campaign how Van Persie, who has just one more season on his current deal, had demanded to know from Wenger how he would replace star players Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, who both quit in the summer.
