Floyd Mayweather believes Conor McGregor fight is a contest fans 'want to see'

FLOYD MAYWEATHER is pursuing a fight with Conor McGregor because he wants to give combat sports fans across the globe the fight 'they want to see'.

Former five-weight world champion Mayweather has been pursuing a boxing match with the reigning UFC lightweight champion for the last six months.

Preliminary negotiations between both fighters' representatives reached an advanced stage in March, but a deal to see the two trash talkers do battle with one another hasn't come to fruition.

The proposed 'Billion Dollar Fight' took a huge step to becoming a reality earlier this month when McGregor reached an agreement with the UFC brass to allow him to enter the boxing world.

Mayweather, who officially came out of retirement in March, has been criticised by many for pursuing a fight with a man who has zero professional boxing experience to his name.

'Money', who ended his career with a staggering 49 victories to his name, isn't bothered by McGregor's lack of time inside the ring, claiming he's more interested in making the most talked about fight on the planet happen come to fruition.

"We have to give the people what they want to see," Mayweather said after watching his protege Gervonta Davis dismantle Liam Davis this past weekend.

"The fans demand that fight; we have to give them what they want to see to make them happy.

"I think this year I'll be back at number one in Forbes' (list of athletes' net worth), in a matter of time."
