NERVOUS Manchester United returned to the top of the Premier League last night – but only just.

Wayne Rooney’s first-half goal was enough to beat Fulham at Old Trafford and restore United’s three-point lead over neighbours Manchester City.

And the home side had to survive a late scare when Michael Carrick looked to have fouled sub Danny Murphy inside the area but ref Michael Oliver waved play on.

The only goal of the game came when Fulham failed to clear a cross and Jonny Evans pulled the ball back for Rooney to fire high into the net in the 42nd minute.

But even United’s leading scorer was taken off by Fergie and replaced by Paul Scholes in an attempt to make sure of the points.

And United finished with a worry over keeper David De Gea, who was left holding his wrist after punching clear a free-kick.
