Nico Rosberg has the Mex factor as world champ Lewis Hamilton settles for second

NEWLY-CROWNED double world champion Lewis Hamilton had to settle for second place as the F1 road show returned to Mexico for the first time in 23 years.

Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg claimed a bitter-sweet victory a week after flying into a sulk as Hamilton became only the second Brit to win three world crowns.

But his win also gave him a 21-point lead in the chase for runners-up place in the championship after Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel slid into a barrier and out of the race on lap 52.

Britain's former world champion Nigel Mansell has a stand named for him here for a stunning 220mph overtaking move in 1990 and was up on the podium to interview the drivers.

And Rosberg was a lot happier this time saying: "Amazing day, a great battle with Lewis, who drove really well.

"I'm really happy with the win and what a place to do it - an absolutely awesome crowd."

Hamilton, sporting as ever, said: "Nico drove a fantastic race. It's just fantastic to be here in Mexico.

"This crowd is like a football crowd. The fans have been amazing. I've never seen anything like it."

Hamilton had promised he would settle for nothing less than winning the last three races and then next year's championship in the build-up.

But Rosberg came out on top this time for his fourth win of the season after claiming pole and getting clean away at the start.

A week ago Lewis infuriated the German when he got the jump on him at the first corner in Austin and forced him off the track.

But Rosberg was not going to allow it to happen again as Hamilton lined up an attack at Turn One with Vettel immediately picking up a puncture and taking a frantic trip to the Ferrari pit for a tyre change.

Hamilton put in the fastest lap of the race on lap four to cut Rosberg's lead to a second.

But Rosberg immdiately reposnded with a fastest lap of his own to show Hamilton he was not going to be bossed again.

By lap 42 Rosberg was a comfortable 2.4 seconds ahead but seems to dislike his team-mate so much that when his engineer said on the team radio: "Lewis is..", Rosberg bit back with:"Don't tell me any more, don't tell me."

He should have been more worried about Vettel whose crash brought out the safety car to bunch up the field and wipe out Rosberg's 3.5 second lead.

It was the same story a week ago when Rosberg was reined in the by the safety car in the dying laps, giving Hamilton the chance to force him into a late mistake that gave the Brit the chance to race through for glory.

But Rosberg held his nerve this time to take the win from Hamilton, with Valtteri Bottas third for Williams.
