Real nearly pulled out of Cristiano Ronaldo deal but he FORCED move from Man United
MANCHESTER UNITED came excruciatingly close to keeping hold of Cristiano Ronaldo before he forced through a world-record move to Real Madrid in 2009.
The Ballon d'Or holder left United for £62m but the deal nearly didn't go through as Madrid thought the forward was too expensive.
President at the time Florentino Perez came agonisingly close to pulling out of the deal, his predecessor Ramon Calderon has revealed.
Calderon told Revista de la Liga: "When Florentino became president and came to the club, he wanted to break [negotiations]. He thought it was very expensive.
"He knew he was a good player but thought he wasn’t worth that amount of money. That was a problem he had at the beginning with Cristiano, who knew that."
And Calderon went on to reveal that it was Ronaldo who forced through the mega-money move - not United's owners as some thought at the time.
