Sepp Blatter to serve fifth term as FIFA president
SEPP BLATTER will continue as FIFA president for a fifth term despite calls for him to quit amid one of the biggest corruption scandals in football history.
Blatter was voted in as head of football's world governing body once again after only challenger Prince Ali of Jordan withdew following the fist round of voting.
Blatter recieved 133 votes to Ali's 73, with 140 out of 209 needed for the two-thirds majority required.
But with only 105 votes needed for an overall majority in the second round, Ali conceded defeat before voting got underway.
Blatter's reappointment comes just two days after seven senior FIFA officials were arrested in Switzerland over corruption allegations.
Blatter, who has been head of the organisation since 1998, has faced calls to resign from the likes of Prime Minister David Cameron and chairman of the Football Association (FA) Greg Dyke.
Cameron said: "Frankly, what we've seen is the ugly side of the beautiful game and he should go.
"And the sooner that happens the better - the faster that organisation can start to rebuild its credibility, which is going to be so important because so many people around the world want to see this game properly managed, properly looked after, so we can all enjoy the World Cups of the future."
Yesterday the 79-year-old told an international press conference how the arrests "unleashed a storm".
He told delegates in Zurich: "I am appealing to unity and team spirit so we can move forward together.
"We cannot let the reputation of football, and of Fifa, be dragged through the mud."
He outlined that those targeted by investigations were "not the entire organisation".
