"SMALL STEPS, BIG GESTURE"

Winning and Living Movement (MVV) at the Center's Regional Center (NRC) of the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC) is organizing the Walk "Small Steps, Big Gesture", on 30th October in the cities of Aveiro, Castelo Branco , Guarda, Leiria and Viseu, for 15h. The Madeira Regional Center also organizes this walk on the same day but at 10am, throughout the Autonomous Region of Madeira. It is an innovative initiative already taking place simultaneously in six cities, which we want to continue in coming years. The Walk aims to warn of the importance of prevention and early detection of breast cancer and raise funds to aid cancer patient.
"Walk This arose from the need to mark the National Day for Prevention of Breast Cancer with an initiative to address the entire population, from adults to young people, women and men passing by. The aim is to gather the most participants to the message of prevention and early detection can reach more people, including the Interior, "said Carlos de Oliveira, President of the Portuguese League Against Cancer.
Participation will be made through a subscription, valued at € 3 (to revert to the NRC and the NRM LPCC), which give access to a kit on the day of the Walk, comprising a bag-backpack, a T-shirt referring to the event , a pin, leaflets on prevention of breast cancer and other education materials for health, bottled water and biscuits. The route of each walk will pass through the most emblematic places in each city. It is expected that hundreds of people participating in the initiative are not intended exclusively for female audiences. This walk has the support of several organizations, including the municipalities of the cities involved.
Are detected annually about 4,500 cases of breast cancer in Portugal and 1,500 women die every year from this disease. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between 35 and 55 years.
Winning and Living Movement is open to all women with breast cancer. Apart from awareness to prevention and early detection of breast cancer, the work promoted by MVV through the physical and emotional support to women. In each local extension of the movement there is a telephone line, where women can talk with a volunteer and information on the MVV and the services it provides. The movement also has an innovative space that aims to assist women in adapting to their new appearance, through a personalized service. The Living and Winning supported directly or indirectly more than 10,000 women over the past two years. Adapted from the model developed in the United States, the Movement exists in Coimbra since 1986. It is also in operation in Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Covilhã, Guarda, Leiria and Viseu. Developed and funded by the Portuguese League Against Cancer Center under the Regional Centre. At the core of Madeira MVV meets all Thursdays, developing various activities.
