JAMES MILNER signed for Liverpool to guarantee himself more regular football in a big international year.
 
 The all-action midfielder, 29, had become frustrated at playing a bit-part role at Manchester City.
 
 Milner featured in 32 Premier League games last season but 14 of those appearances came off the bench.
 
 And with Euro 2016 just 12 months away, Milner was well aware he needed to maximise his game-time.
 
 City - and boss Manuel Pellegrini - were desperate for the England star to stay.
 
 They offered him a bumper £165,000-a-week contract but money wasn't an issue.
 
 Instead, Milner was willing to take a pay-cut to quit the Etihad and move elsewhere.
 
 Milner will earn £150,000-a-week at Anfield but it is the lure of more football that is the most attractive proposition.
 
 He's set to play in centre-midfield for the Reds, a position he prefers over the wide role he's often played for City.
 
 Kop legend Jamie Carragher said: "It's a very good signing - a free transfer who can play in a few positions and who's got great experience.
 
 "He's very similar to Jordan Henderson and I have no doubt one reason he's joining is to play in a more central role rather than out wide."
