Wales still sweating over fitness of Euro 2016 star: Could miss Belgium clash
WALES are still sweating over the fitness of captain Ashley Williams
The Swansea defender was due to have a scan yesterday on the shoulder he injured against Northern Ireland on Saturday in a collision with team-mate Jonny Williams.
The 31-year-old refused to come off in the final few minutes of Wales’ 1-0 win despite being clearly in pain and unable to move his left arm properly.
He wore a sling after the game with an ice pack strapped to his shoulder as the players celebrated reaching the quarter-finals.
Now boss Chris Coleman faces an anxious wait to discover the full extent of Williams’ injury, amid fears his participation at Euro 2016 could be over.
If he is ruled out for Friday’s game against Belgium, West Ham defender James Collins will replace him in the starting line-up with either Gareth Bale or former skipper Aaron Ramsey taking the captain’s armband.
“I think we have options if Ash is not fit,” said Coleman.
“When we gave the captaincy to Ash it was really to try to get the best out of Aaron and take some responsibility off his shoulders.
“We must not forget what happened with Gary Speed and Rambo was affected by that as he had a real good relationship with Gary, so we tried to take some pressure off Rambo.
“Aaron has been the vice-captain since. I believe that he will be the captain of Wales one day when it is not Ashley Williams.
