Britain remembers: Queen leads Remembrance Day service as millions pay tribute

MILLIONS of Brits have paid tribute to the fallen soldiers who lost their lives for their country to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The Queen led the main memorial service at the Cenotaph in London today as hundreds stood by to watch leading politicians and royal family members lay wreathes as a sign of respect.

Dressed in black, Her Majesty laid a wreath of poppies at the memorial for "The Glorious Dead" while Mrs May and leader of the Opposition Jeremy Corbyn followed suit.

In keeping with tradition, the Queen was joined by senior members of the royal family including the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales, who also laid wreaths.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Duchess of Cornwall and other royals watched on from the balcony of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Politicians stood side by side as current Prime Minister Theresa May stood with former Prime Ministers David Cameron, Tony Blair and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Theresa May said this year's occasion should be a time for honouring the bravery of British forces fighting Islamic State, assisting UN peacekeeping efforts in Africa or fighting piracy.

As Big Ben struck 11am, the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery fired their First World War-era guns to mark the beginning and end of the reflection in the heart of Whitehall to mark a minute silence across the nation.

The Last Post was then sounded.

The Prince of Wales will later take the salute at a march past of veteran and civil organisations on Horse Guard Parade.

Later on this afternoon falling poppies are set to be projected onto Big Ben from dusk.
