Christmas forecast revealed: UK set for DEADLY cold snap with -8C across country TONIGHT


 
BRITAIN is braced for an onslaught of killer cold weather – but will be blessed with sunny spells before Christmas, forecasters have revealed.
 
Temperatures are expected to plummet to as low as -8C in the south today as winter officially kicks off.
 
 Thermometers are set to slump across England and Wales throughout the rest of week as the cold snap threatens to bring a colder than average December.
 
 Conditions are expected to become more “unsettled” by the middle of the month with low pressure sweeping across the nation.
 
 But it’s not all doom and gloom.
 
 According to Met Office meteorologist Helen Roberts, periods of crisp sunshine and calmer weather will arrive just in time for Christmas.
 
 Mrs Roberts said: "In the second half of the month it looks like high pressure will make a return so there will again be a lot of quiet weather around – not a lot in the way of rain or snow but there will be crisp sunshine by the end of the month and chilly frosts.
 
 "I think most people would be generally fairly happy with that sort of weather and it's a change from the last few Decembers and the start of winter where we had a lot of stormy whether."
 
 It comes after the mercury plunged to -8C in the south of the country yesterday on the coldest night of the year so far.
 
 Elderly people have been asked to take extra care as health officials warned “cold does kill”.
 
 Met Office meteorologist Simon Partridge added: “The first part of December looks most likely to be colder than average as we see the same sort of weather pattern we have at the moment.
 
 “As we go through the latter part of the month it looks like we'll see things closer to the seasonal average.”
