A TOWN near Liverpool was on lockdown for five hours after an unexploded bomb was found earlier.

An area of St Helens, Merseyside was evacuated after a WW2 artillary shell was discovered this morning.

Residents in the heavily populated area were evacuated from their homes.

Cops placed a large cordon around the industrial estate where the explosive was found.

The bomb squad were called to the scene in Penlake Industrial Estate, on Reginald Road.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said on Twitter at 3pm: "We're in #StHelens this PM following the discovery of an artillery shell - it was discovered at 9.40am on #ReginaldRoad.

"A specialist team attended & confirmed the shell was an unexploded WW2 bomb. The bomb is currently in the process of being removed."

The area was finally reopened at 3.30pm after the device was removed.

The police spokesman had said earlier: "We are currently in #StHelens following the discovery of a suspected artillery shell at Penlake Industrial Estate on Reginald Road.

"Cordons are currently being put into place and members of the public are advised to avoid the area."
