TERROR IN LONDON: Man with knives stopped in Whitehall near No.10
ARMED cops have arrested a man reportedly carrying a backpack of knives in Whitehall just yards away from Downing Street.
Pictures from the scene show what appears to be three knives and a mobile phone near a brown rucksack on the ground near the Houses of Parliament.
Cops said they arrested a man just yards from Dowing Street following an "incident".
Other photos show officers armed with automatic weapons escorting a bearded man wearing a black tracksuit away from the scene.
He was reportedly wrestled to the ground on a traffic island at the Parliament Square end off Whitehall, close to the Foreign Office and the entrance to Downing Street.
Westminister in now on lockdown with several roads closed.
Scotland Yard has confirmed a man is being held on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and planning acts of terrorism.
A spokesman said: "The man, aged in his late twenties, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism.
"Knives have been recovered from him. He is being detained under the Terrorism Act and is in custody in a south London police station.
"Detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command are continuing their investigation, and as a result of this arrest there is no immediate known threat."
No one is believed to have been injured in the incident.
A spokesman for Theresa May said she was not at Downing Street at the time of the incident.
The Prime Minister has reportedly been told about the incident and is being regularly briefed.
A Met spokesman said there is not believed to be any further threat present and counter-terrorism officers have launched an investigation.
London remains on high alert after a terror attack on Westminster bridge on March 22 killed six and injured dozens of others.
Khalid Masood rammed a 4x4 vehicle into pedestrians before stabbing PC Keith Palmer as he guarded the forecourt of the Palace of Westminster.
Masood was later shot dead by police.
