JOCKEY Frankie Dettori has been banned from racing for six months after being found guilty of taking a prohibited substance.

The 41-year-old claimed he had "let down the sport he loves" following the ruling by French authorities.

Dettori tested positive for a substance believed to be cocaine at Longchamp in September.

And racing bodies around the world are likely to enforce the suspension handed out by France's Galop.

As a result, Dettori will be unable to ride competitively until May 19 next year.

Dettori's legal representative Christopher Stewart-Moore said that his client "fully accepts" the decision.

"He also accepts that he has let down the sport he loves and all those associated with it, as well as the wider public," he added.

"But most of all, and this is his greatest regret, he has let down his wife and children."
