England demolished at Headingley as New Zealand level series

ENGLAND were crushed by 199 runs as New Zealand won the second Test at Headingley to secure a 1-1 series draw.

Chasing a world record 455 to win and having to bat out the day to seal a draw, England were dismissed for 255 with over 19 overs remaining.

Spinners Mark Craig (3-73) and Kane Williamson (3-15) shared six wickets as only Alastair Cook (56) and Jos Butler (73) passed 30 for the hosts.

It was only New Zealand's ninth Test win over England, their biggest in terms of runs, and they have not lost a Test series since their 2013 tour of England.

Resuming on 44-0, England lost opener Adam Lyth for 27 with just three runs added to their overnight total.

They then lost three wickets for one run as Gary Ballance (6), Ian Bell (1) and Joe Root (0) fell in quick succession to leave them 62-4.

Ben Stokes (29) steadied the ship with Cook as they added 40 before the former fell shortly before lunch.

Cook was trapped LBW during the afternoon session before Moeen Ali (2) fell offering no shot.

Stuart Broad (23) and Mark Wood (17) both offered support to Butler, who was last out LBW to Craig.
