STEVEN GERRARD has hit back at his pal and Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher for dismissing England’s World Cup hopes.

Former England defender Carragher reckons nothing will change and Roy Hodgson’s squad have no chance of success in Brazil in 2014.


But England and Liverpool skipper Gerrard rapped back, saying: “So should we just not go? Should we give up?

“Should we not go to that tournament because of what Jamie Carragher said?


“Listen, there are a lot of people out there with different opinions and we can’t control what they are saying.


“What’s important is that we as a group know what we are good at and what we need to improve.


“There is talent out there and that’s a matter of fact. We’ve also had a few injuries, so we’ve got those players to come back.


“There is a talent like Jack Wilshere to come back and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will benefit from this experience.”


Carragher had said: “England have no chance of winning the World Cup in Brazil, if you ask me. Maybe we had half a shout at these Euros, because of the stage we got to.


“But playing too deep, giving the ball away, those sort of things catch up with you in the end.


“It’s very disappointing – Italy were an average team.


“But these things have been said for so long. I remember, as a kid, going to the FA school at Lilleshall. It was the same things being said.


“When is it ever going to change?”
