JOLEON LESCOTT has blasted Belgium star Dries Mertens for putting Gary Cahill out of Euro 2012.

England defender Cahill has been ruled out of the finals after suffering a double broken jaw in a collision with keeper Joe Hart.

The Chelsea star clattered into Hart’s shoulder after being shoved in the back by Mertens in Saturday’s 1-0 Wembley win over Belgium.

Cahill’s KO is another blow to England boss Roy Hodgson, who has also seen John Ruddy, Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry struck down.

But despite Mertens claiming Cahill’s injury was accidental, Lescott insists he should have been punished with more than a booking.

“I’m gutted to hear Gaz is ruled out,” said Manchester City’s Lescott.

“The challenge was more reckless and dangerous than most two-footed tackles, so why only a yellow?”

Hodgson has been forced to turn to rookie Liverpool defender Martin Kelly, who has played just two minutes of international football.

Cahill was expected to be in Hodgson’s starting line-up alongside Blues team-mate John Terry for England’s opening Group D clash with France.

Lescott is now the firm favourite to replace him for the match next Monday in Donetsk.
