Manchester Arena Bombing: Uefa issue security message ahead of Europa League final

UEFA have issued a security update ahead of the Europa League final after the Manchester Arena terrorist attack last night.

Twenty-two people were killed and a further 59 injured after an explosion following a Ariana Grande concert.

Police said a lone male attacker, who died in the blast, was carrying an explosive device which he detonated.

Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs have both expressed their shock and sadness.

And Uefa have also issued a security update ahead of United's Europa League final clash with Ajax in Sweden tomorrow.

"There is currently no specific intelligence which might suggest that any of the UEFA Europa League final activities in Stockholm may be target of attacks," a statement read.

“Uefa has been closely working with local authorities and the Swedish FA for many months and the terrorist risk has been taken into account since the very beginning of the project.

“Furthermore, a number of addition securing measures were implemented following the attacks in Stockholm last April.

“Due to tight security arrangements, UEFA urges fans to arrive at the stadium as early as possible, as detailed checks will be made at the entrances, resulting in potential delays in accessing the stadium.”

Uefa added in a tweet: "UEFA is shocked by last night's attack in Manchester.

"Our thoughts are with the victims and the families of those affected."

Manchester City and United both posted tweets.

City wrote: "It's with great sadness we hear of the terrible events at the Arena.

"Our hearts go out to all affected and to our city's emergency services."

Man United posted: "We are deeply shocked by last night’s terrible events at the Manchester Arena.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected."

City's Etihad Stadium is being used as a base to help those affected by the bombing.

Ajax v Manchester United kicks off in Stockholm at 7.45pm tomorrow night.

Flags at Old Trafford are flying at half-mast and the club are likely to ask Uefa for permission to wear black armbands in the Europa League final.
