WAYNE ROONEY fired home Manchester United's sole shot on target to secure all three points at Anfield.
 
 
 Liverpool peppered David De Gea's goal on numerous occasions forcing the Spanish keeper into a number of stops before Rooney popped up in the 78th minute.
 
 The United skipper reacted quickest after Marouane Fellaini's header crashed off the crossbar to volley in from six yards.
 
 It was harsh on the hosts, who stay ninth, while United close the gap on fourth-placed Tottenham to two points.
 
 Jurgen Klopp made one alteration for the Red Devils' visit while Louis van Gaal named an unchanged team following the midweek draw at Newcastle.
 
 Liverpool were quicker out of the traps and Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Jordan Henderson all tried their luck in the opening half an hour.
 
 Both sides came out after the break more attack-minded and David De Gea was forced into a fine stop from the tricky Roberto Firmino.
 
 United immediately raced down the other end and worked an opportunity for Anthony Martial but the France international skewed wide from inside the box.
 
 Henderson stinged De Gea's palms before the United stopper pulled off an excellent save when Emre Can unleashed a fine strike from 20 yards.
 
 United failed to register a single shot on target in the opening 75 minutes but the aerial threat of Fellaini worked a treat with the full-time whistle looming.
 
 He climbed highest to meet Daley Blind's cross and hit the bar but Rooney, who had previously scored just once at Anfield, was on hand to smash past Simon Mignolet.
 
 Steven Caulker was thrown out as a late sub with Liverpool hurling the kitchen sink at the United defence but they stood tall and saw out injury time to claim a morale-boosting win.
