Louis van Gaal reacts to the moment Manchester United duo saved them from disaster LOUIS VAN GAAL was left thanking David De Gea and Chris Smalling for saving his Champions League bacon.
Manchester United were heading for a fourth-straight goalless draw last night until CSKA Moscow striker Seydou Doumbia ran clean through in the 78th minute.
He had a free shot at goal but was foiled by a terrific last-ditch save by De Gea.
Doumbia pounced on the rebound but was then denied by Smalling who slid along the goal line to stop the ball.
United then went straight up the other end and grabbed all three points thanks to Wayne Rooney's header.
Defeat would have left them bottom of Group B but they now sit proudly at the summit.
"It was the only attack of CSKA Moscow and that was when a player of Manchester United stepped in the wrong way," Van Gaal said.
"David De Gea has saved us and then Smalling has saved us, but that is also football - that you are running everything out of your body to prevent goals and it is fantastic to see that Smalling is doing that.
"Ashley Young was also doing that [behind Smalling] – it was a great sliding tackle."
